Did you know that ants farm aphids and torture them? Aphids release a sugary substance called honeydew, which the ants feast on. So, to prevent the aphids from flying away, ants will bite their wings off. This is just one of the weird nature facts you’ll learn from the Edmonton-made comedy series, Frick I Love Nature, streaming on CBC Gem.
“I always like to call it a little weird nature show because it’s the nature show that really takes all the weird facts of nature that you don’t really see in a lot of conventional nature shows,” says Gordie Lucius, co-creator, host and writer of Frick, I Love Nature.
Lucious was hiking with friend and co-creator of the show, Stephen Robinson, when the idea to do a funny nature show struck. The show was funded by StoryHive in 2017 and consisted of 10 minute episodes focusing on a specific species or topic like animals that die after mating or amazing animals in the rocky mountains. The show uses a combination of comedy, interviews with nature professionals and thorough research to educate and entertain the viewer.
All previous episodes of Frick, I Love Nature are available on the Frick, I Love Nature YouTube channel, which has over 4,000 followers.
“We wanted to make an accessible way to make people fall in love with nature again,” says Lucius.
Frick, I Love Nature streams on CBC Gem starting March 25 with seven brand new 15 minute-long episodes. Expect to learn more about ants, urban wildlife and deceptive animals.
