Across Alberta, and in Edmonton, there is an urgent need for compassionate individuals to open their hearts and homes and become a foster caregiver — the demand for foster caregivers continues to grow. If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the time to change a child’s life for the better. What’s more is you likely already have the skills needed to succeed.
LoveStrong is an association of eight Edmonton foster agencies, supported by Alberta’s Ministry of Children and Family Services, empowering individuals to transform lives and build stronger communities through fostering to ensure every child has a stable environment. In Alberta, there are approximately 3,000 children in 1,500 foster homes.
Fostering is about creating a space where a child can feel safe, supported, and loved during a difficult and uncertain time. Many Albertans already possess the skills needed to be a successful foster caregiver. If you are someone who cares deeply about children’s well-being, you likely already have the capacity to help a child thrive while in foster care and to support them until they can return home.
One common misconception is that foster caregivers need specialized training or endless patience. In reality, the qualities that make a good caregiver — empathy, stability, and the ability to nurture — are readily found in many people.
Foster families do not go through this journey alone. They receive comprehensive training, resources and guidance from social workers and foster-care agencies. This means that while fostering can be challenging, there is a strong network of support to help families navigate each stage. Additionally, foster caregivers are compensated while remaining connected to a network of professionals who are committed to helping children heal, grow, and eventually return to their families.
LoveStrong emphasizes that fostering is typically a temporary role, with the primary goal being to reunite children with their biological families once it’s safe to do so. However, many foster families continue to maintain a lifelong connection with the children they care for, becoming an important part of their extended family. Foster caregivers often become a bonus grandparent, aunt, uncle or simply someone special in the life of that child. While the commitment of being a foster parent is generally temporary, the impact and the bond it creates can last a lifetime.
