If you’re an avid reader of Avenue, you already know that our city is a leader for innovation and technology in Canada (just check out the Innovation Issue for lots of local stories of tech successes). And, the best place for you to get a first-hand look at new tech built in Edmonton and to meet the community is at Edmonton Startup Week, running October 21 – 25, 2019.
Part of a global network of cities brought together by Techstars, Startup Week brings entrepreneurs, business leaders, community champions, and friends together over five days to build momentum and opportunity around each city’s unique startup culture and entrepreneurial identity.
“It’s the best time of the year!” says Startup Edmonton CEO Tiffany Linke-Boyko. “The whole idea around it is because we think there are great things happening in our community and we want to help celebrate it.”
Startup Week began in Edmonton in 2014 to celebrate a growing scene of community events, companies, meetups, and flagship experiences including Launch Party, which began in 2010.
In the time since then, the event has grown to include more than 50 events over five days in startup spaces across the city — ranging from community meetups and social events to panels and masterclasses. One of the most popular events each Startup Week is the Startup Crawl: a chance to meet the brains behind Edmonton’s emerging companies and to check out their workspaces in downtown Edmonton during a night-long office crawl with more than 100 of members of the city’s tech-entrepreneur community.
But the crowning event during Startup Week is Launch Party, which is entering its tenth year in 2019.
“My ultimate favourite event of anything that we do is Launch Party,” says Startup Edmonton CEO Tiffany Linke-Boyko. “I like it because it’s about the community and what amazing founders are building and doing. Celebrating our tenth anniversary is a special milestone for Startup Edmonton and the community. It’s a chance to reflect on how far we have come and how many incredible companies and teams we have congratulated over the years.” Launch Party offers a chance to meet some of Edmonton’s brightest entrepreneurs and to try their products, and learn how their ideas could change the world.
Since 2010, more than 85 technology companies have launched products at the event, including rapidly growing teams such as ZEPT, Jobber, Drivewyze, Poppy Barley and Showbie.
Startup Week and Launch Party are the best way to find out more about Edmonton’s bright, technology-enabled future, and learn how the city is positioned to expand on the world stage.
