There’s another new kid on the brewery block, and it all started with a little collaboration between neighbours.
Jared Curle and John Toman, who are two of the six partners in Odd Company Brewing, are beer enthusiasts who have been home brewing for years. Brett Loree is another partner who lived across the street. One day, they decided to take a leap and try to transition from home brewers to brewery owners. “It’s as simple as, we all like drinking beer, we’re at the age where we have a little bit of time and a little bit of spare money to try this,” says Curle.
The brewery, located in the Oliver Exchange building, has a rotating line-up with approximately 12 beers available at a time, and it will be constantly changing. “I think we don’t have to be as safe [because of our smaller batch approach] ,” says Curle. “I have some ideas of what I want to do in terms of some different mix fermentation stuff… we want to try to do some hoppier beers and fermentation-forward kind of stuff.”
In order to encourage customers to sample beers that might be different than what they’d typically go for, Odd Company will offer smaller format options. “We’re hoping that way we can educate and grow people’s palates a little bit,” says Loree. “We’re kind of hoping that every time someone comes in here, if they’re in on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, there’s always going to be something different.”
