So, is there a more-than-subtle irony that a food truck that specializes in Korean barbecue makes an irresistible, vegetarian snack?
I ventured downtown to find the Dosi-Rock truck parked just outside the Legislature grounds. It was a gorgeous spring afternoon, the kind of sun-kissed day that begged getting take-out and then walking over to the grounds. There’s no restrictions on eating outside at a picnic table or a park bench, as long as you are being smart about things. Just socially distance and you’re good.
I ordered the bulgogi and the mandoo, a four-pack of vegetarian dumplings stuffed with soybean protein, noodles and greens. And, for something so simple, they were done oh-so-well. The dumpling is nicely seared on the outside to give it crunch, and the filling pack a lot of, dare I say it, meaty flavour? It was far more substantial than a snack, too.
The bulgogi is done well. The shredded beef is heavily dressed in sesame, and the essences of the grill come through quite nicely. Served in a bowl with salad and rice, it’s a large meal. It’s a solid effort and made for a real nice way to spend the lunch hour. For a few minutes, life felt almost, well, normal. And that alone is worth a thumbs-up.
