The dining space at the Coast Edmonton Plaza is now being operated by A Cappella Catering and its executive chef, Biren Panday. We’ve received the Christmas dinner package from A Cappella over the past couple of years — and they’ve been delicious — so, the family decided to give the restaurant venture a try.
Prestons is open for breakfast and dinner — it’s a sad commentary on the state of downtown that a restaurant in the heart of the city isn’t open for lunch. But, there were a couple of items on the breakfast menu that intrigued us, so we decided to go in the morning. (As well, analytics tells me that our readers love stories about breakfast items. Sometimes, I think we could have a microsite simply called “Breakfast” and it would get enough views to be sustaining).
The fine people at Prestons have a breakfast sandwich. And, sure, they could have simply called it a breakfast sandwich. But, no, they went and called it The Yegger Bomb. And it’s described in the menu as “the breakfast of champions.” How can I not order that? It’s like the menu was screaming, “I dare you, I double-dog dare you.”
What arrives on my table looks nothing like any other breakfast sandwich in town. It’s big. Really big. It’s a ciabatta bun filled with a fried egg, avocado, Calabrese sausage, melted Havarti cheese and tomatoes. Arugula and chipotle sauce give the sandwich a nice warmth — I wouldn’t go far as to call it “spicy.” But each bite is definitely a hearty one — and the smokiness of the sausage definitely comes through.
But what’s better than stories about breakfasts — are stories about overkill breakfasts. And, The Yegger Bomb really is the bomb. You know I was dying to write that.
