The home stretch is in sight. I am just a month away from being able to chomp down on a potato chip again. Or to have a bag of buttery popcorn. Or have a pineapple-flavoured Life Savers (I am not the type to let hard candy dissolve, I get about two-thirds through and then crunch it).
But, Edmonton has so far provided me with lots of options to eat and mind my teeth at the same time. This week, I didn’t have to go far from the Edify office. It’s just a few blocks’ journey to Meuwly’s, which not only offers house-made deli meats and a bevy of condiments, jams, syrups and pickled goodies, but has a solid lunch offering, as well. After all, when you’re in the deli business, you should make a good sandwich. A rich tomato soup with a bit of a peppery kick was a bonus. (You might notice that there are crackers in the picture. I only had a couple, and they sat in the soup till they were soggy enough to pass the no-crunch test).
There’s a sub and grilled cheese on offer, but I love a BLT. And this one had, drum roll, candied bacon. Really, all bacon is basically meat candy, but not all bacon is candied. This BLT came in between two slices of hearty bread, no white toast, here. And, wow, the sweetness of that bacon was really pronounced. There’s also a real earthiness there, and it might take a second for the eater to realize that the big blast of salt that you’d expect to get from a thick slab of bacon just wasn’t there. Obviously, the tomato and lettuce are also important, but we all know that they make up the backing band in this case. They’re like the two guys in the Smiths who didn’t write any of the songs and you have a hard time remembering their names. Did I mention that the bacon was sweeter than I even expected? Oh, I did?
Having lunch in a deli just feels right, though. On this fine afternoon, I was only missing potato chips a little bit.
