Have you ever had a hankering for a red relish burger with roasted corn and blue cheese? What about two patties complete with all the fixings, including fried squid rings and salsa?
Much like Marble Slab is to ice cream, The Burger Joint – located in a strip mall in southeast Edmonton – offers a short pre-fabbed selection of menu items, but the real draw is the make-it-to-your-taste menu that lets you build your own burger.
You start with a choice of meats. From your selection of chicken or beef, lamb or veggie, you move on to your sauces. The standard choices of ketchup, mustard and mayo remain, but, if you feel the need for some tartar sauce, Thousand Island dressing, relish, ranch or garlic donair dressing, the Joint can find room to accommodate.
Then on to your toppings. Again, lettuce, tomato and onions remain staples, but perhaps you want to ramp it up with a veritable, edible rainbow of options. Throw on some red cabbage, carrot strings, grilled pineapple, green olives and purple onions for something visually scrumptious.
When you reach the premium toppings section, you’re adding the final touches to your gastronomic opus. Swiss, cheddar, jalapeño, marble, feta, mozza and blue cheese can be paired with donair meat, a sunny-side-up egg, guacamole, grilled ham, fried squid rings, and the perennial favourite, bacon.
Be proud if you find your burger is a touch tall: This is one of the only places in Edmonton where you can measure your appetite in inches.
