Rose, nectarine and sweet cream, or Bourbon Natural with apricot, pineapple and cherry might sound like tasting notes discussed in a high-end liquor store. But at Rogue Wave Coffee Roasters, a whole team is working to source unique coffees for the cafe. You can try these varieties at the pour-over tasting bar or take them home.
A full roastery runs in the back of the shop supplying wholesale and subscription bags of roasted coffee for purchase. Shoppers can watch the beans being processed on site through a glass wall at the back of the store. Sending out over 100,000 pounds of coffee annually, the bulk of the business is actually online.
Customers across Asia and the Middle East are ordering Edmonton-roasted coffee beans from Rogue Wave. The cafe uses online forums and social media to share their product with educational and unboxing videos on YouTube. You can feel the enthusiasm for unique brewing styles with the showcase of awards in national and international brewing competitions in categories like Aeropress and Ibrik/Cevze (the Turkish coffee vessel).
Rogue Wave prides itself in always having something new on site to taste. And for Edmontonians, the cafe is a haven for coffee lovers.
“We want to share the art and craft of coffee,” says David Laville one of the shop’s co-founders. “We show how diverse coffee can be.”
He loves when online clients come into the shop and say hi or someone new introduces themselves.
It’s not just a place to pick up a bag of coffee. It brings in gear from Japan that can’t be found elsewhere in the city. Shelves of Origami, Kinto, Hario, Aeropress, Chemex and so many other specialty equipment brands are available to touch, try and purchase.
“It’s our contribution to the fabric of the city,” Laville says of the coffee community of coffee drinkers. Come in, enjoy something you’ve never tasted and take home something new.
