I don’t know what it is about downtown lunch spots and, well, me.
First, there was a sandwich called The Sandor. And, now, there’s Steve’s Famous Sandwich Co. Clearly being named “Steven Sandor,” which is a Hungarian name combination common enough to get me funny looks in Budapest hotels, is the inspiration for… Edmonton sandwiches.
(OK, OK, Steve’s Famous Sandwich Co. has nothing to do with me. And neither did that Sandor sandwich. But, heck, anything to give my ego a stroke, right?)
This downtown spot opened its doors over the summer, and it has a pretty wide selection of deli sandwiches, burgers and donair wraps. But, if there’s anything a first-time visitor is going to order, it’s the sandwich that’s named for the restaurant: The Steve’s Famous Clubhouse.
Now, we know that a clubhouse sandwich needs to have fowl and bacon, but Steve takes it to the next level. There’s sliced turkey deli meat, a generous amount of bacon but then it gets a bit crazy — cucumbers, banana peppers, mayo, mustard, sprouts and, of course, the requisite lettuce and tomato. A lot of times, the toothpicks are placed in sandwiches to hold them together, but it’s really just for show. In this case, it’s badly needed. When I grab the sandwich, it feels like it wants to explode in my hands, that there is just far too much stuff crammed inside. Seriously, I could only get through half of this lunch challenge before I had to accept that I had been defeated… and needed to get a to-go box. It’s thick, it’s filling and, well, I am happy that it’s named for me.
Even though it’s totally not named for me.
