A few of my friends have seen Yorgos Lanthimos’s landmark 2015 black comedy, The Lobster. It’s a polarizing film. From the small sample size of my friend circle, I can say that people either think the film is a work of genius or a failed attempt to make high art.
I fall into the former category; the idea of a mythical world where single, miserable people are transformed into single, miserable animals is a pretty wild concept. Are you so content to be alone, that you’d live your life out as a lobster?
What does this have to do with what I just ate for lunch? Really, I just thought this was a pretty interesting way to lead into a review of a lobster roll.
The Lobster Mobsters have storefronts in Nisku and West Edmonton. There are other locations in Alberta and food trucks that patrol the highways of Western Canada. It’s a bit of an empire that brings seafood from Atlantic Canada to the West.
The Lobster Mobsters also make a takeaway lobster roll. And that’s why I’m at the West Ed shop. I am asked if I want garlic butter. Like that’s a real question. Isn’t that an automatic?
What I get is a massive sandwich. In fact, the term “roll” is a total misnomer here. It’s lobster with a special mayo generously stuffed between two pieces of long garlic bread. There’s salt, there’s sweet, there’s butter. The lobster is spot-on; it’s not chewy or rubbery. It is delicate and, wow, is it on point. It’s probably the best take on the lobster roll I’ve tried in the city.
Wait, where’s my old friend, Chris? When we were young, he swore to me that he’d never get married…
