When Brit’s Fish and Chips closed its doors for good in Wîhkwêntôwin, the “for lease” signs weren’t in place for very long — if they were even up at all.
During the Christmas season, a new sign went up and the doors were opened. Yangming Chinese Restaurant was now serving.
And, yes, this place follows in the well-established tradition of prairie Chinese restaurants. There’s the orange and lemon chicken, the spicy beef, the kung pan chicken and the sweet and sour pork. I visited during the lunch hour and got the lemon chicken (a personal favourite) and a wonton soup. And, what’s on offer is a pretty decent value. The combo clocks in at less than 20 bucks (I got the soup as an add-on) and it comes with chicken fried rice and vegetables. The breading in the chicken was crisp, and stood up well to the lemon dipping sauce. The chicken itself was tender, and yes, it totally hit the spot when it comes to one of my all-time favourite comfort dishes.
If you order the wonton soup, and fret that maybe it will only have one or two dumplings, don’t worry. The soup was loaded with treasures just waiting to be fished out — and the broth was great to break a cold day.
The wheel isn’t being reinvented, here. But this is a spot that offers some solid Western Canadian Chinese offerings at prices that won’t break you. And, in today’s inflationary world, a little certainty ain’t a bad thing.
