Sometimes, the name of the place tells you all you need to know. So, when you see “Nam Siam” on the sign and think, “maybe this place serves a mix of Vietnamese and Thai dishes,” you’d be right.
This spot opened in Chinatown earlier this month. I went in, looked at the menu and realized I had one of two paths to choose. Would I choose a Vietnamese noodle dish or a pho? Or would I go the Thai route, with a curry or a Tom Yum soup?
I decided to go the Thai route, and went with the Phanang Curry — and it was one of the best Thai dishes I’ve had so far in Edmonton. Of course, the proprietor asked me “is it too spicy?” multiple times as I made my way through the mix of peppers, coconut, broccoli and beef. It’s got sweet, savoury and floral notes — and it feels like you have an orchestra’s worth of taste buds working at one time.
I’m looking forward to trying the Vietnamese side of the menu next time. But, for now, the Thai half of the menu has scored a knockout.
