Tucked into a cozy little spot by the river right off 98th Avenue, Cloverdale Coffee is a new local spot to add to your coffee shop roster. This grab-and-go gem opened in February 2025, and it’s the latest project from the folks behind Little Brick Café, Dogpatch, and Bread + Butter Bakery.
The interior is minimal, modern and warmly welcoming: a soft, terracotta-toned curved bar anchors the space, crowned with a sculptural white-and-copper hanging rack. Globe lights add a retro glow against cream walls, while a window-facing standing bar offers the only indoor surface for sipping. With no tables inside, it’s designed for movement, perfect for fuelling up before work, or unwinding post-therapy at the psychology clinic next door. You can fuel up before unloading your emotional baggage.
I opted to take my order outside and enjoy the spring sunshine. I went with a smooth, spicy iced chai to balance out the Basil Bird — a garlicky panini-pressed sandwich tucked with chicken breast, pesto, mayo, tomato and provolone.
The menu is tight but promising: salted caramel lattes, macadamia mochas, and a rotating cast of soups and sandwiches. Also can’t forget about the freshly baked pastries, including glazed pocket buns, chocolate chunk cookies, and a lemon poppy loaf that was flirting with me from the display case.
What the coffee shop lacks in square footage it makes up for in setting. Right across the street is Gallagher Park, best known as the hillside host of Edmonton’s beloved Folk Fest. With views of the Muttart Conservatory’s glass pyramids and trails that thread into the river valley, this corner of Cloverdale has long had the perfect ingredients for a community hub, it just lacked the espresso. Until now.
When I went, staff were already buzzing about their first Folk Fest in the neighbourhood this summer. You could feel the energy, like the cafe was stretching into place, getting ready for the rush. For a neighbourhood that has long drawn visitors for its festivals, pyramids, and postcard views, it’s kind of poetic that what it finally gets is something as simple and essential as a cup of coffee.
