Doughnuts, like so many baked goods, have become trendy. They get bigger, loaded with more outrageous toppings, as bakers push the dessert to its limits hoping for a viral moment.
But sometimes, you just want a classic: light and simple, tossed with cinnamon sugar, glazed or dipped in chocolate icing. When I crave something classic and sweet, Bliss Baked Goods is where I go. That’s what makes them my favourite in the city — consistent, delicious, uncomplicated.
Maybe what sets Bliss apart is the fact that it uses natural ingredients and avoids preservatives. It’s the kind of nostalgic baking one finds in the best family-owned neighbourhood bakeries. Nothing gimmicky, just good, old-fashioned baking, making for classic, springy yeast doughnuts.
While mass-produced doughnuts can be overly complicated or cloyingly sweet, Bliss produces doughnuts that are airy and lightly sweet, about as guilt-free as a doughnut can be.
And to top it off, Bliss’s kitchen is nut-free, dairy free and kosher pareve. With a solid offering of vegan and gluten-free treats, too, these doughnuts are the perfect dozen to pick up on the way to the office, board meeting or get-together.
