For the Ramos sisters, it only took a sip of coffee.
It was Ella that first introduced Jemima to the world of coffee. As little girls, this felt like a magical new finding, something that ignited a kind of obsession in them, which then turned into a dream to open a coffee shop. And it didn’t take long for it to come true.
They opened Gathr this past March — a women-owned, Filipino-Canadian nook.
As university students, the sisters could not find a place that stayed open long enough for them to study and hangout. They catered to that need with their new space — which is open till 11 p.m. most nights of the week. “If I were to describe the atmosphere it would be daytime cafe, nighttime lounge,” Jemima says.
Picture vintage speakeasy New York influences. Dim lighting, vinyl player, second-hand leather furniture. “We emphasize comfort with a touch of elegance,” she says. You will also find a photobooth in the back of the room, adding to the old-school feel, which Jemima says “is all about documenting memories and capturing moments.”
Gathr’s Filipino roots are apparent on its menu. From the local Tatak Pinoy pastries to the ube signature drinks to the classic iced Milo chocolate, the sisters wanted to bring a bit of their own nostalgia to Edmonton.
“Every aspect of the space comes with a story,” Jemima says.
Its extensive mocktail selection also pays homage to their family — some drinks are named after their grandparents. On a hot summer day, you cannot go wrong with Simeona’s Sunset, a sweet concoction of non-alcoholic dry gin, grapefruit, lemon and bitter orange alternative liqueur.
This is an alcohol-free establishment, but don’t let that stop you from getting a caffeine or sugar buzz.
Added bonus: Gathr doesn’t charge extra for alternative milks. How many coffee shops can say that?
