Add this to the “things I didn’t know yesterday” file. Rossonero, the airy coffee-and-gelato spot on 109th Street near the corner of Jasper Avenue, also has pizza made to order on the menu.
I stopped in, thinking I was going to get coffee and something sweet, when I spotted the pizza menu and decided, heck, why not have lunch? There are margherita and rosemary chicken varieties on the menu, but I went for option number three, the spicy Calabrese. Now, once you order, the pizza is made on the counter, right in front of you. I was asked if I wanted some extra pepper to ramp things up even more. That sounded like a challenge. So, of course, the answer was yes. The pizza is then placed into a high-temperature oven and, less than 10 minutes after making the order at the counter, it was there in front of me at the table.
And it was solid, thin-crust pizza; the crust was able to hold up, and the edges had just the right amount of crispness. The balance of tomato sauce and cheese was good. There’s a generous assortment of Italian cold cuts on top, and the peppery heat nicely underpinned the whole thing.
The pizzas are 12 inches, so enough to share, or for one very hungry person.
