When you buy tickets for this year’s Best Restaurants event, you’ll be helping nourish Edmonton students.
A portion of proceeds from this year’s Best Restaurants event, which will be held on March 18 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre, will support Food For Thought, an organization which provides breakfasts, lunches and snacks to kids in need at 13 schools throughout Edmonton. The program covers approximately 500 kids.
Kristine Kowalchuk, whose parents launched the initiative at Sifton School, says that the organization is doing everything it can to reach as many kids as possible, though it has received enough requests “that we could be in every school in the city.” Teachers and parents in the participating schools identify kids who they think might be going hungry, and they’re entered into the program. “And we are committed to serving whole, healthy food,” says Kowalchuk. “We don’t do the pre-packaged pizza pops or juice boxes or granola bars.”
What might surprise some people is how spread out the member schools are throughout the city. It’s easy to look at the map and assume that the targeted schools are all in poorer areas. That’s not the case. There are kids going hungry in some of Edmonton’s most prestigious neighbourhoods as well.
“What surprised us is that there are pockets of poverty throughout the city,” says Kowalchuk. “It’s a shame that so many kids in Edmonton aren’t getting enough to eat, every day.”
