Coffee is just part of the whole cafe experience: You need to have a great atmosphere, be a spot that’s great for conversation or finishing the edits on someone’s next great novel, and be a prime place for people-watching.
Well, Nuestra Coffee Shop. which opened last week across the street from Borden Park, checks those boxes. It’s amazing what’s been done to a half-moon shaped building that used to be home to a marble and granite shop. Giant picture windows offer a view of the streetscape, and makes the place feel really, well, big. The seating is spaced out well enough so that you’re not pulled into your neighbours’ conversations. And, judging by the steady flow of people coming in and out of the place, Nuestra already feels like its become a community gathering spot.
The Americano was on point: As it should be. And, there’s a selection of house-baked sweet and savoury offerings, from gluten-free cookies to muffins and croissants. Because it was close to lunch time when I stopped in, I went for the ham and cheese croissant, and it did the trick. The croissant was nice and flaky, with a nice roasted flavour in the background. The cheese wasn’t overpowering. It made for a nice, simple snack as I watched the snow gently fall. Did I mention those great picture windows? Ah, I did.
Back when we used to do our Best Neighbourhoods survey, respondents repeatedly told us that one of the things they most wanted in their communities was a great independent coffee shop. Well, for those living near Borden Park, you’ve got one.
