Andrew Leach was gearing up to celebrate his birthday when the pandemic hit. Since he couldn’t go to a restaurant, he decided to get take out and support his favourite restaurant — Northern Chicken.
Picking a favourite item on the menu isn’t an easy decision for Leach. He loves it all. “You can’t go wrong with fried chicken,” says Leach. “And, you need to try all the different sides — macaroni and cheese, pork and beans, and buttermilk pie.” But, going with the Nashville-style fried chicken shows he isn’t afraid of spice.
While the food is delicious, it’s not the only reason Leach frequents Northern Chicken. He loves how open the company is on social media about how the employees are treated. During the June heat wave, Northern Chicken changed its menu to cold items only to protect the kitchen staff from heat exhaustion.
Leach shows his support by ordering take-out from Northern Chicken about once a month, and, though the restaurant is closed to dine-in, he can’t wait for the day he can get the whole Northern Chicken experience.
“Once they’re reopened, it’s a great spot for kids,” adds Leach. “It’s one of the places where you can feel comfortable with your kids or their hockey teammates or whoever. It’s good food in a really casual space. It’s really well set up.”
