I don’t know how when or why, but over the years, Edmonton has turned into a fried chicken hotspot. There are the well-known places, which we cover extensively in our Best Restaurants issue and throughout the year (we’re a fried chicken-loving crew), but in Edmonton, if you look closely in the right neighbourhoods, there’s decent fried chicken to be had in the most inconspicuous spots, too, like a gas station in Central McDougall.
Yes, Country Fried Chicken operates inside the Husky gas station on 107 Avenue., like a small, meaty version of a Tim Hortons kiosk. For years, the owners have made racks of Halal, deep fried legs and thighs (as well as samosas and potato wedges) everyday, displayed right next to the coffee station.
The easiest way to mess up fried chicken is to not heat the oil enough to start, and end up with a soggy mess. Country Fried Chicken, at least on this day, was not that. The large pieces were exactly the right amount of crispy, the meat wasn’t dry, and the portion — five pieces for $12.54, plus a cool can of Crush Cream Soda — was perfect. Will Country Fried Chicken make an appearance in next year’s Fried Chicken category? Probably not. But if you’re in McDougall, and in the mood for a non-chain fried chicken lunch, pull in to the Husky at 106th Street. Might as well top off your gas tank while you’re there.
