There must be something special about Edmonton when it comes to boutique doughnut chains. We’ve seen Ottawa-based Maverick’s Donut Company come into the city, and now it’s Duck Donuts. Edmonton is just one of two spots in Canada (Burlington, Ont. being the other) to welcome the born-in-North-Carolina doughnut chain.
What makes Duck Donuts interesting? Until today, you’ve probably never thought “wow, I wish doughnuts were made to order.” You went to the doughnut shop, you saw what was available, and you ordered what you wanted. But, at Duck Donuts, you begin with a blank slate. You can order doughnuts from a pre-set menu, or make one up as you go along. Strawberry cream, pretzel pieces and marshmallow icing ? Can do. It’s like specifying what you’d like on a burger or a sub sandwich. I admire anyone who can transform a need that didn’t exist into a business venture. So, go, Duck Donuts.
When I walk in, I see numerous icings and toppings on the counter. It would take me forever and a day to come up with six different doughnut recipes, so I go with the new Sweet and Salty Half Dozen, a new set which launched Feb. 5. Peanut butter icing. Vanilla icing. Strawberry icing. Drizzles of chocolate and marshmallow. Bacon bits. Pretzel chunks. Crushed potato chips. All of these ingredients found their way into this box of doughnuts. And they are served warm.
Because the doughnuts are fresh and topped in front of you, no matter if they’re personalized or from the menu, they are flaky on the inside. Grab them too tight, and they’ll crack or even break right open. The fried doughnut has a real nice crisp outer layer, but inside it’s downright fluffy.
One thing: You will need to be patient, as the staff tops your doughnuts one by one. You are here for the wow factor, not speed.
