When I was a twentysomething writer living in Strathcona, Sam Wok was a staple for late night soup and noodles. And, if you are of a certain age, you’re probably nodding and recalling some of your favourite Sam Wok memories. It was great, and it didn’t break the bank.
So, when we talk about comfort food — and let’s face it, comfort food is about memory — Sam Wok (10417 67 Ave.) came to mind. Would the soup be as good as I remembered?
Well, I walked in during a cool afternoon, thinking this might be the first time I’ve ever been in the place when the sun was out. So, I went for the BBQ Pork Noodle Soup; it comes, of course, in a meal-size serving, with bits of red-glazed meat floating in a bronze broth. With green onions floating along, the broth was packed with flavour, but thankfully not blasted with salt. The amount of barbecue pork in the broth was substantial, along with very fine noodles.
If you haven’t been to Sam Wok in a while, it still delivers — exactly what you want.
