It’s no secret that everyone seems to love wacky, over the top, decadent milkshakes. What used to be a simple beverage has now turned into an entire dessert category, with restaurants around the world devoted to creating the gravity-defying desserts. And now, Edmonton is in on the crazy shake game, thanks to Calgary’s Re:Grub expanding to include an Edmonton location. The tiny spot is tucked away just off Whyte Avenue, and though they offer burgers and fries, the shakes are the clear draw.
There are options to satisfy your sweet tooth in the regular shake category, topped with treats like doughnuts and ice cream sandwiches, but if you’re looking for the full experience, check the experimental category. The shakes there take things to an entirely different level – in a good way. Take the Alegria, for example. The shake itself is a standard creamy vanilla shake, with streaks of purple along the side of the glass that taste like red velvet cake batter. The entire rim is covered with red velvet cake crumbs, and there’s a colourful dollop of blue whipped cream atop that, with even more cake crumbs. Then, a sprinkle of marshmallows to hint at the biggest element of the shake – a tri-color Rice Krispies treat rainbow that is almost bigger than the shake glass itself. The rustic shape of the rainbow indicates that it’s homemade, and the treat is buttery and sweet. You’ll have consumed an entire dessert before even digging into the shake itself, but when it comes to Re:Grub, the attitude seems to be go big or go home – so you may as well indulge to the fullest.
