When you or a family member has a food sensitivity or an allergy, eating out can be a trial. And, you can feel guilty when you ask your server about what you can and cannot have. As much as modern restaurants do their best to accommodate diners with dietary restrictions, it still can be an uncomfortable process for diners and servers alike.
For diners like Telus World of Science President and CEO Constance Scarlett, the fact that the Lingnan is transparent about its menu is comfort indeed.
“I love Chinese cuisine, but I also have a gluten allergy which can really limit my options,” she says. “The Lingnan has an extensive —and tasty — gluten-free menu that I know will be prepared in a way that keeps me safe. The Lingnan has been an Edmonton institution for over 75 years. Their staying power can be attributed to their incredible food, but also their unparalleled service and hospitality. It is the warm welcome we receive every time we visit that keeps my family going back again and again.”
The Quon family — The Lingnan’s owners — have been featured on reality TV, in our Best Restaurants section and have even graced the cover of Edify magazine. The restaurant, as Scarlett says, has three-quarters of a century worth of history. But, peruse the take-out menu and you will see the gluten-free options clearly marked. Our editor has also brought his family to the restaurant, and his son has severe food allergies — and the restaurant has been able to accommodate in a friendly manner.
