Going for pizza after a game, or during a break in a weekend tournament, is one of the most common off-field rituals in amateur sport. Go to a pizza parlour in the evening, or the weekend, and you’ll often see at least one large table occupied by a sports team.
Janelle Janis’s life-long love of Franco’s pizza began when she was an elite soccer player. Explore Edmonton’s director of event and business development and Top 40 Under 40 alumna discovered this pizza institution (like, who hasn’t tried Franco’s pizza at least once?) when she was playing for the University of Alberta Pandas’ soccer squad.
“I was introduced to Franco’s in university by one of my Pandas teammates, who is now one of my best friends, Laura Perri,” Janis says. “Her dad started Franco’s with his brother in 1980 and it’s become this awesome family dining experience. Our team hosted many dinners and parties there during the season and they would regularly cater our soccer events and fundraisers for us – and they still cater most of the parties I throw because I love their food so much!”
“They have a family secret pizza dough recipe — and even though they tell me they love me like family, they oddly refuse to share it with me — and the Hawaiian Pizza is just straight delicious comfort food that melts in your mouth with a zing that brings you back for more. The food is incredible, but the people are even better.”
