“‘Soup’ or ‘no soup’ – that is the question. When it comes to soul-satisfying broth, nothing beats a bowl of spicy goma, with an extra half-egg and added bok choy, at Tokiwa Ramen in the Brewery District.
“While technically open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there is only soup until there is soup no more. It’s better to be there when the soup’s on. Ramen is my favorite solo meal. It’s slurpy and splashy and best enjoyed with one’s head down breathing in the aromas — podcast optional.
“Since Tokiwa is a small restaurant, enjoying a solo bowl also greatly improves the chances of sidling up to the bar seating and not having to wait in line. Last New Year’s Eve, which was a brutally cold day, I was busily running errands and stopped in to warm up and slow down over a bowl that would become my new favourite thing. Since then, I’ve tested out the spicy goma to see if it works well in all seasons and at all outdoor temperatures – and it does! But nothing will ever replace that first sip feeling of hot bone-broth, in a cozy spot, on a minus-30 degree day. It was the best way to say goodbye to the past year and welcome 2023 in.”
