At Edify, we do our best to comb social media and keep our ears to the ground so we’re aware of most of the new restaurants that open in the area.
But, sometimes, we find a great spot thanks to a happy accident.
That was the case this week, as I headed back from an assignment in Parkland County. Driving through Spruce Grove on Highway 16A, I thought I might go for a fast-food burger, but then noticed Thai Venue off to my left. So, I pulled in, went inside this new-ish spot (opened in 2022) and my server told me quite confidently that the Green Curry on the menu was the “best in town.” If there is one thing I like, it’s confidence.
There are two things I absolutely love when it comes to Thai cuisine, and they’re my go-tos when I try a spot I’ve never been to before; the Tom Yum Soup and the Green Curry (so, it wasn’t like I needed the hard sell on that, but, again, I appreciated the effort).
The Tom Yum Soup is deep red, with tomatoes, mushrooms and chicken swimming in the broth. The spice comes up nicely, and the lemongrass is pronounced. It’s a herb-loaded soup, and this one is deep with flavour and a really nice level of heat. It would be a satisfying lunch all to itself — and I think it ranks as one of the best bowls of Tom Yum I’ve had in this city.
So, that was a pretty awesome start, and then came the main course — the Green Curry. And, well, the first thing you’ll notice is just how much curry comes with the order. It’s really too much for one sitting — which is fine, because you will have plenty to bring home to snack on afterwards. The crinkle-cut carrots add some colour, the peppers add crunch and the slices of beef are delicate. But the sauce packs some punch — deliciously so. Is it the best green curry in town? Well, it’s right up there with the best I’ve had in the Edmonton area.
The server asked me, when I left a good amount behind to be packed up, if it was too hot to handle. And I said the flavour was spot on, it was just that there was so much food to be had.
