Lagos Flavors is buzzing. Sunshiny yellow walls radiate warmth. Afrobeat music plays in the background. A steady stream of people flow through the door. The front-of-house employee is grooving and singing as he takes orders for savoury seafood, while the air carries the tantalizing aroma of aromatic spices and smoky meats, luring in passersby.
I decide on the regular (ie: not spicy) Grilled Fish, a dish that promises deep flavour without overwhelming heat. The fish is coated in layers of aromatic spices that infuse every bite with warmth and depth. The exterior is crisp, seared to a golden brown, while the inside remains tender, flaky and succulent. Each bite is boldly seasoned, balanced with just enough heat to awaken the taste buds without overpowering them. A squeeze of fresh lemon brightens the flavours — it’s a simple yet deeply satisfying dish, comforting and flavourful.
Nigerian cuisine is all about depth, heat and heart. Built on a foundation of rich stews, smoky rice dishes and well-spiced meats, it’s a balance of comfort and intensity. Together, these dishes embody the soul of Nigerian cooking — bold, comforting and unforgettable. To that end, Lagos Flavors was born from a desire to bring authentic Nigerian cuisine — particularly the dynamic flavours of Lagos — to Edmonton. It serves as a cultural hub, and offers a space where Nigerians and their friends can gather, share meals and celebrate their heritage.
Mopelola Akingbade, owner and chef of Lagos Flavors, envisioned an environment that not only reflects the vibrancy of Lagos through its food but also through its atmosphere, from tables named after Lagos neighbourhoods to walls adorned with artwork from Nigerian artists.
“Lagos Rivers was opened because there were not many Nigerian restaurants (in Edmonton) that represented what Nigerian cuisine was really like — especially with Lagos cuisine — and it was also born of the need to have a communal space for Nigerians to come to, and to bring their friends to as well who want to try Nigerian food in that kind of environment.”
