The term “hidden gem” gets thrown around a lot, but Milk and Honey — a Glastonbury neighbourhood cafe serving baked goods and inventive sandwiches with fresh, quality ingredients from local producers — is the definition of one.
Graham and Lisa Hafermehl — owners of The Table in Onoway, about 65 kilometres west of Edmonton — opened the cafe inside Saints Church on 199 Street and 63 Avenue in 2023. The couple had been invited to help create a gathering space for congregants. Open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. six days a week, the colourful nook draws you in with a bright mural, a miniature market selling local gifts and beans from its supplier Candid Coffee Roasters.
The menu is small — just six sandwiches, but they all have big personalities. As the name suggests, the Morty is a hearty mortadella wonder, complemented with its whipped garlic mascarpone, pepperoncini and arugula. My personal favourite is the Mona Lisa — a fresh focaccia stuffed with layers of prosciutto, Parmigiano Reggiano and arugula, glazed with a balsamic dressing.
Even as someone lacking a bit of a sweet tooth, I could not get away from the Nutella latte. Candid’s roast perfectly enhances the melted creamy hazelnut spread — it’s chocolatey heaven in a cup. But if that’s not sweet enough for you, try the cafe’s rich walnut brownie with sea salt flakes. Or for a serious sugar rush, try the Lazy Boi — a made-out-of-everything-you-can-find-in-your-kitchen cookie fused together with potato chips, pretzels, dark chocolate, graham crackers, oats, espresso and caramelized white chocolate. If the Mona Lisa is smiling, it’s probably because she just finished one of these.
