If there’s something we want to put on our city signage, that Explore Edmonton should be hollering from the rooftops, it’s that this city is home to maybe the best Mexican dining scene in the country.
Am I being hyperbolic? Possibly, but when I think of the great Mexican spots that have opened in this city over the last five years, it’s easy to lose count. And, when the judges debate the Best Mexican category for our annual Best Restaurants issue, it’s one of the most heated categories.
In this city, we take tacos seriously.
And, we have another gem to add to the crown. La Morenita just opened on Alberta Avenue. It boasts Mexican pastries, cakes and brunch. But, of course, there’s a taco menu, too.
I visited during the restaurant’s opening day, and ordered a plate of three birria tacos. The stewed beef was moist, with a hint of spice and salt, and came with plenty of cilantro and onions. When the filling is this good, you don’t need to dress up the taco in multiple toppings. There were green and red salsas served on the side, and just a few drips were good to add some zing and smokiness to the party.
There were kids playing in the restaurant, it has a real family-friendly vibe, and there is plenty of floral decor to brighten the space.
So, if you’re making a map of where to find great Mexican eats in the city, add this one to the list. Welcome to the scene, La Morenita. Edmonton’s place as Canada’s hotspot for Mexican food is something we need to shout about.
