By now, Yelo’d has become a well-loved name on the Edmonton ice cream scene. And, the owners have branched out by opening Little Bonbon in the heart of Chinatown.
The ice cream on offer plays hard on Asian themes, with flavours like Chinatown Rocky Road and Grandpa Wong, which is a fudge brownie concoction. My daughter got the Rocky Road. And, as an added bonus, you can get the scoop rolled in cookie crumble — green vanilla, strawberry or brown sugar. Of course she got the cookie crumble, because I am the sort of dad that caves in whenever my daughter asks me for something. Her mother is well aware of this weakness, but she’s wasn’t there when dad and Nico went for ice cream. When the cat’s away…
I got two scoops in a bowl; Jade and a feature flavour, Van Loc Caphe. Jade is a mix of matcha and cheesecake, and I got it rolled in vanilla crumb. The matcha flavour is strong — that’s a good thing, and the cheesecake is quite subtle. But the real star was the Vietnamese coffee scoop. This wasn’t overly sweet; in fact, the strong coffee flavours punch you in the mouth. It’s like a frozen double-shot of espresso — and it’s absolutely wonderful. I hope this feature flavour goes into regular rotation. If not, get to Little Bonbon ASAP before it’s switched out.
My daughter said Little Bonbon is a 10 out of 10. She would not steer you wrong. Now I have to get back to her and give her whatever else she wants.
