Many Whyte Avenie walkers probably wondered the same thing as me when they strolled past the corner at Gateway Boulevard; “What is going to replace Have Mercy?” The second floor space remained closed for months, but a new tenant is in town. Community Taps + Pizza opened the last week of March and places a large focus on, well, community, craft beer and pizza.
Each month, the restaurant selects a Brewery of the Month, and every Friday, $1 from each purchase of a beer from that brewery goes towards a local charity.
Now, let’s talk about the food. If you’re going to order an appetizer, I highly suggest the mozzarella sticks. Don’t be disheartened when the server says it only comes with three pieces because soon you’ll have some of the largest mozzarella sticks you’ve ever seen in front of you. These are for the die-hard mozza lovers, and they’re best tackled with a fork and knife.
Then, it’s time for pizza. Community offers 12 New York-style pizzas and nine Detroit-style pizzas. It’s a great selection if you’re feeling experimental, however, I went with a friend who has basic taste at best. We ordered the margherita pizza, and it was delicious. The crust was baked to perfection and the cheese was extra gooey.
Community also has a list of specialty cocktails. The QE II G&T is citrusy and light, but the best part is the preparation. The drink is served with the gin on the side. Pour the gin in and watch as the drink transforms from blue to purple.
