If you’re a 124th Street regular, you’ve likely seen the banner promising that, sooner or later, Sushi Wave would be opening on the northern end of the strip.
Now, the banner is gone, replaced by an “open” sign.
While Sushi Wave is new to 124th Street; it isn’t new. The restaurant has moved into the neighbourhood, leaving its old south-side location behind. The space is modern, dare I use the word “sleek” (wait, I just did) and I took my family there during the soft opening.
We started off with the shrimp tempura. While this is no way reinventing the wheel, both my wife and daughter remarked just how light and flaky the batter was, and how the shrimp itself wasn’t rubbery at all. It’s hard to make anything that’s fried feel like a light snack, but it’s accomplished here. These were a real treat.
Now, pretty well every Japanese restaurant has a signature roll, often named after the restaurant itself. And, because it’s the house roll, I’m pretty well obligated to try it. You can’t ignore the house speciality, right? So, we got the Wave House, and there was a lot going on. There’s tamago (sweet egg) tuna, prawn tempura for crunch, salmon eggs, spicy mayo and unagi sauce. While I might have been expecting more spice, the combination defaulted to the sweet side. These were some pretty big rolls, and if you can finish each of them in one bite, consider competitive eating as a new career path.
Of course, we ordered more — and since there was something called a Hockey Puck on Fire, how could we resist? It’s got spicy tuna, imitation crab meat and avocado, and it got a quick bath in the deep fryer before it got to the table. The spice level is not overpowering, and the bit of crunch that the rolls got from the deep fryer was great.
With some inventive rolls and light touch when it comes to preparation and presentation, Sushi Wave’s new spot might just become a new 124th Street destination of note.
