I won’t call myself a picnic enthusiast. In fact, I have a list of reasons for not liking picnics: the ants, the food crumbs, the wind stuffing hair into my mouth and me not knowing how to sit comfortably on a blanket.
But, mostly, it’s my beef with ants.
When I go on picnics, either for a cute summer date or to show off a new dress, I want everything to be perfect. So I didn’t stop being anxious until I saw the pre-ordered picnic box in front of me — it was gorgeous.
The four-inch picnic box from Under the High Wheel may seem smaller than expected at first sight, but it’s packed with food, enough for up to three people. Through the plastic, I saw the inviting chicken wrap, a variety of veggies and fresh fruit, and brownies on a skewer. Once I took off the lids, I saw that there was a small bowl of spiced potato salad and a house-made dip.
I could tell that those who prepared this box knew my priorities on picnics for how easy it is to take an Instagramable picture of it. On top of that, everything inside tasted so fresh. The brownies smoothly melted on my tongue from the first bite, and the chicken wrap was so tender that I didn’t mind the sauce dripping through my fingers. But, the potato salad and the dip was saltier than I thought it would be, so don’t forget to pair the box with a drink.
One thing I learned recently is that not every picnic has to happen on the grass — you might want to find a picnic table in the park, and it only takes a few minutes. While I blame my dad for leaving me fighting over food with ants every time as a kid, maybe it’s better to make new memories of picnicking this summer.
