It’s the age-old dining quandry: You start reading the menu, and the little voice representing your stomach in your brain goes, “Ooh, that looks good… that’d be nice… haven’t had that in a while, and I don’t think I’ve even tried that before!”
Your stomach’s voice goes on and on, getting louder and louder, seemingly unaware that these dishes cost money and you couldn’t eat all of them anyway. It’s your first time at a new place, and you haven’t even left the appetizer section.
Luckily, you’re sitting in Sang, a Korean and Asian fusion-style restaurant that offers table d’hôte, or chef’s table service, in which you get a set menu of 10 sharable dishes (including Fresh Oysters, Korean Pancakes and Doenjang Stew), plus your choice of a main dish.
The spicy Grilled Buldak chicken stands out to us, and the Tomato Kimchi helps ease the heat. The Tuna Tataki is a savoury starter and the Korean Fried Chicken is… well it’s Korean Fried Chicken at a beautiful sit-down place — do you really need us to sell that to you?
The space is bigger than you’d probably guess from its 109th Street exterior (just north of the High Level Bridge), which provides plenty of room for the stacked food carts to reach your private seating among the dark and moody atmosphere. You still won’t be able to try every item, but you can stuff and shut your stomach up for a while, at least until the next time you go.
