A couple of years ago, we discovered the breakfast sandwich at the Green Ash Cafe, a cozy spot for coffee and snacks in a green house just north of Whyte Avenue. The back yard of the home was converted into a great patio space.
The Green Ash Cafe name is dead, but the business lives on. This year, the owners added an expansive menu of Korean and Japanese dishes, plus some things that fuse the two cuisines (think about some Spam sushi and rolls that feature kim chi). So, they changed the name — going with Sushi Cafe Madang. It’s both a coffee house and restaurant and, yes, that great patio space is still around. And, with some great September afternoons still ahead of us, there’s time to soak up some sun.
I went there for lunch, and ordered the chef’s sushi and sashimi selection, along with a non-alcoholic Electric Lemonade (I was driving, so here’s my nod to being responsible). The lemonade was blue, fizzy and a heck of a lot more fun than a can of pop.
As for the lunch entree, there weren’t a lot of surprises, but it was solid. There was a generous serving of chop chop scallops with tobiko, and the spicy salmon was pretty potent. The salmon strips were luscious, and the best part of it all was that I was able to soak up the sun while downing it all.
Oh, you can still stop by for coffee or tea in the morning. With the Campus St. Jean being only a stone’s throw away, this is important info.
