Take a stroll through Chinatown and indulge in its diverse culinary offerings. All you need is $10, $20 if you’re really hungry. From Jan. 28 to Feb. 8, the City of Edmonton and a team of food-loving volunteers invite you to visit one of our city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods with the ninth annual Chinatown Dining Week.
It all started back in 2018, with a group of volunteers — including food blogger Sharon Yeo — who wanted to shine a brighter light on this historic district. They noticed how busy it got during lunchtime, but as dinner time approached, traffic tended to die down. They decided to work with five restaurants to show Edmontonians what Chinatown has to offer. And their inaugural year did just that. The response from visitors was overwhelming, according to Yeo. She noticed foot traffic increase and people delightfully eating their way through the whole week. “Food can be such a great gateway into new cultures or places, and this was definitely the case with our tours. Many people asked us for restaurant recommendations afterwards so they could make the most of their time in Chinatown,” she wrote in her blog, reflecting on the first Chinatown Dining Week.
The event has grown drastically since 2018, now collaborating with more than 32 restaurants, and it actually lasts closer to two weeks.
For those who have never been, it’s a straightforward affair: after perusing the extensive menu, head over to the restaurant of your choice and ask the server for their Chinatown Dining Week special (most places offer $10 and $20 options). No tickets, no fuss, just pay when you are done.
Whether you feel like a bowl of flavourful pho from King Noodle House or sweet-and-spicy ginger beef from Padmanadi or a rich paneer makhni (paneer in a butter, tomato and cashew gravy) from Namaste India Downtown, the dining week’s repertoire gives you lots to choose from. And yes, there’s also dessert. Don’t forget to leave with a piece of Hong Kong Bakery’s fruit cocktail cake or some Little Bonbon ice cream.
