Nestled in the Heritage Valley Area in the city’s deep southwest, this bright cafe is worth a visit. Inside, a cozy fireplace sets the mood on gloomy days, and there’s a licensed patio for enjoying an adult brew on sunny days.
Besides the classic coffee list, Caffiend offers a rotating selection of freshly baked goods and a sandwich feature. Churros usually fill the display on Mondays. Soft, sweet and so tasty, these babies are popular, so stock up when you can.
The sandwich special changes daily, and on our visit it was a vamped-up grilled cheese, with three kinds of melted cheese and thinly sliced ham, grilled to perfection and served with a bowl of rich and smoky tomato soup.
Caffiend also has a few permanent favourites. If you’re in the mood for something savoury, try the Deep Fried Mac & Cheese. You know the top layer of a cheesy pasta that is perfectly crispy? These have that in every bite. Served on the side is a chipotle lime sauce, a tangy companion to the pasta-filled crunch.
Or, sample the appy platter that features three kinds of homemade hummus. The white bean is subtle and salty, the curry cauliflower is strong and spicy, and the beet is a mix of savoury and sweet. Dig in with toasted naan bread or carrot sticks.
