I love fish and chips — it’s probably one of my favourite meals. And although my husband makes great fish and chips, it’s good to have a favourite shop we can stop by when we (he, let’s be honest) doesn’t want to go through the whole involved process of battering and frying fish at home.
Catch of the Week is known around Edmonton for its selection of fresh fish, including hard-to-find seafood — but they also have a to-go counter with prepared foods. I was excited to hear they have sushi on offer, but on that particular day, I needed to satisfy my fish and chips craving. And Catch of the Week delivered.
At the counter, we ordered the cod and halibut, because why not?
The store is massive, which we took full advantage of while waiting for our meal, browsing the fresh and frozen fish, prepared foods and even picking up some salmon-stuffed olives while our meals were cooked fresh.
It was a busy Saturday around noon, and most of the tables were already occupied with other diners enjoying their meals. The first thing we noticed when we got our meals was just how big the portions were — large, fresh pieces of fish served on a huge bed of french fries. I love fries, but even I couldn’t finish them all. (We made poutine the next day with leftover fries, so it was a win-win).
The batter on the fish is light with a nice texture — a great crunch when you cut into it. It’s topped with a tasty tartar sauce, and of course, it’s not fish and chips without a side of coleslaw. While side salads are easily overlooked, this one is the perfect supporting role to the star of the show — tangy and light, not weighed down with dressing, offering a nice contrasting flavour and texture to the fish.
Whether you want to satisfy a fish and chips craving, or just need to stop for lunch while you’re shopping, Catch of the Week is worth the visit.
