It would be hard to find an Edmonton restaurant that would fit the “tried and true” moniker any more than the Lingnan. The restaurant opened its doors in 1947 and moved into its current downtown location in 1963.
Whether you choose to go the take-out, delivery or dine-in route, order several dishes and share with a large group. The Lingnan’s Gee Gee Chicken which, if you dine in, is served in a large stone pot, is a favourite, but I gravitate to the dishes that target my sweet tooth. The Peaches and Cream Shrimp lives up to the name, with the salt of the shrimp balanced by big fruit flavour. And the Lemon Chicken Canton, well, it’s been written about before – but, if you needed a reminder, the sticky sauce is absolutely addictive.
The Lingnan isn’t reinventing the culinary wheel, but it is a vital reminder of a time when a night of Chinese food represented a fancy night out. The waiters still wear red jackets and carry napkins, while the large aquarium and ornate golden accents give the Lingnan a sense of ’60s chic that just still seems, well, cool.
