Job Title: Owner, Mosaic Home Services Ltd.
When Steven Knight was growing up, his parents owned a demolition company in Edmonton. He got a nickel for every nail he pulled.
Now, when he’s not tearing things down, he’s building them up through Mosaic Home Services. In seven years, the company has gone from a small business running out of a storage shed to an umbrella of seven brands at 15 locations — including demolition like his parents, but also screen door installation and repair, decorative lighting installation, painting, fence installation, window and gutter cleaning and maid services.
Employees visit close to 100,000 homes every year, and they do public works — including a giant decorative light installation in the ICE District, and decorations for the Edmonton Valley Zoo’s winter festival. Soon, the company will expand through a network of franchise partners to become Canada’s largest family of home-improvement brands.
Knight loves working with a diverse bunch. “We were doing a potluck and there were 20 different nationalities and cultures represented — we could basically have our own Heritage Days. We need that in our community because everyone’s going to have different ways of looking at the world,” says Knight.
That diversity means helping clients in unexpected ways. One couple, who were recent immigrants, needed help with a screen door installation and they found it challenging to relay what they needed in English. A team member, who’s fluent in Arabic, was able to help.
“I listened to the recording after, and I don’t understand Arabic, but you could hear the tension in their voices dissipate. It was a nice little: hey, here’s how we made someone’s day.”
