On Anthony Henday Drive heading south, turn right onto Terwillegar Drive and you’ll find a series of eye-catching communities that together make up Windermere. As “winder” means to take one’s breath away and “mere” is the boundary of an area, the neighbourhood paints a perfect backdrop for an afternoon drive.
Before the area underwent drastic residential and commercial development starting in 2006, the valley was predominantly farmland and part of Strathcona County. It became part of the southwest region of Edmonton in 1982 and is now a welcome mat for a variety of new homeowners. Like most communities situated beside a river, the oldest homes boast the best views. The North Saskatchewan River marks the western boundary of Windermere and is lined with beautiful houses built as far back as 1960.
Not only is there minimal traffic, plenty of parking and beautiful homes to see, but there are also numerous entertainment attractions and hidden gems ready to unearth.
It’s as if you and Leonardo DiCaprio are in the same room at Edmonton’s only VIP movie theatre. Sitting front row in a giant leather recliner with a glass of wine in your hand can forever change a person’s perspective on going to the movies. Arrive early to enjoy alcoholic beverages, appetizers and entrees before the show. Grab a spot either inside the theatre or at the stylish lounge right outside and receive table service until the movie starts. The bar remains open during the show for guests to visit at their will.

Although this chic eatery lies on the outskirts of what’s technically considered Windermere, it’s a place where one simply must dine when nearby. Inside, a wall of Grey Goose bottles separates the upbeat lounge from the elegant dining area, where it’s best to have a reservation. The dishes are masterfully prepared by one of Edmonton’s most revered chefs, Andrew Fung, a Gold Medal Plates winner in 2010. In case you have difficulty narrowing down what to try, the Pacific chinook salmon is downright delectable.
