Nestled between the bars and boutiques of Whyte Avenue lies a store that welcomes culinary experts and enthusiasts alike. Knifewear is a sanctuary that transports you to a world where traditional Japanese craftsmanship meets cutting edge technology. And each blade tells a unique story.
The store, which first opened in Calgary in 2008, opened its Edmonton location about 10 years ago. “We did a couple of pop ups, about 11 or 12 years ago, because we noticed there were folks and chefs driving down from Edmonton to our Calgary store,” says Brand Communications Lead Nathan Gareau, “So we did a couple of pop ups, and that turned into a full-time store just over 10 years ago.”
Most of Knifewear’s team is made up of chefs, so they really understand the importance of knives as kitchen tools, especially Japanese ones.
“Not only are they handmade by incredible artists, but they tend to stay sharp longer and take a much sharper edge than your average knife,” says Gareau.
In terms of sourcing the knives, Gareau says that the most important thing is the relationships they have built with craftspeople: “We deal with these people very, very personally… they’re good personal friends to us.”
Speaking of future goals, Gareau says the company is taking a break after opening its Toronto store last year. “That’s been a really big goal for a long time. So we’re taking a bit of a breather now, but we continue to grow and reach international markets through our online store. And we hope to open a store in Kyoto in Japan one day.”
Whether you’re drawn in by the allure of a finely crafted blade or the welcoming atmosphere, one thing is certain — a trip to Knifewear will leave a lasting impression, as sharp and enduring as the knives it showcases.
