When Chef Andrew Fung struck out on his own, he surprised many by opting to open XIX Nineteen in Terwillegar, a spot that had few independent restaurants at the time. He doubled down on his suburban presence by heading to St. Albert for his second location and his strategy is working – the restaurant remains a solid place to go for a great meal.
I have a feeling that if Fung were to take the ahi tuna twists off the menu – a perfect forkful of spicy Thai noodles, Asian slaw, cilantro aioli, and a seared piece of tuna on top – the city would riot. Fung graciously shared the recipe with Edmonton Cooks, so you can try your hand at recreating the dish at home, but it’s just never quite the same. Chef Andrew Fung
Fung also knows, though, that you have to be consistently evolving to last in the city’s culinary scene. A recent menu revamp in early 2018 yielded a few intriguing fusion dishes, such as the pork belly tacos. While pork belly can be almost too decadent at times, Fung pairs it with fresh pico de gallo, avocado cream and a ginger glaze that adds just a hint of lingering heat.
Of course, food is just one part of the restaurant experience – the ambience and service play a huge role as well. XIX Nineteen excels in that regard too, with wait staff that are attentive and knowledgeable, and an atmosphere that is warm and inviting.
