For local food blogger Linda Hoang, asking her about her favourite place to eat is a loaded question.
“This is the hardest question anyone could ever ask me!” Hoang says. “I have so many favourites and go-tos in Edmonton, so let’s say this is just one of my faves.”
The lucky spot that gets the nod this time is Shanghai 456, a no-fuss Chinese restaurant situated along 118th Avenue.
Despite the menu boasting nine soups, 17 noodle dishes, 11 cold plates and over 30 different mains, it’s the steamed pork soup dumplings that keep Hoang coming back.
“I like to gauge favourite dishes by whether they make me exclaim, ‘Oh my god, this is so good!’” Hoang says. “And although I’ve had an immeasurable number of these soup dumplings, each and every time, I still exclaim, ‘Oh my god, this is so good!’”
The steamed pork soup dumplings don’t just make Shanghai 456 one of Hoang’s favourite places to eat, but it’s also a restaurant that she’s rooting for especially hard during the pandemic.
“Shanghai 456 is a frequent dining spot — well, pre-pandemic — for my family, and I truly hope it makes it out on the other side of this,” Hoang says. “I’d also like to shout-out all BIPOC, family-owned restaurants in Edmonton who rarely make it on top lists and often don’t have an online presence, but are dishing out some of the most flavourful and interesting dishes in the city.”
