Years ago, I was in New York City for the first time. I was in Hell’s Kitchen, looking for a pizza to bring back to the hotel for the family to share. I walked into a pizza spot and made a totally dumb tourist mistake. I asked the guy behind the counter about pizza sizes — as in, how big is the medium? How large is the large?
He looked at me with wide eyes. And I totally deserved it. “Buddy,” he said. “There’s one size. That’s it.”
And, so I walked back to the hotel with a very large — and crazy good — pizza.
This brings me to Lore Pizza, which shares a space with Trial & Ale Brewing in West Edmonton. We’ve got more than a few emails from our readers, asking us why we haven’t reviewed Lore, yet. And, yes, I do respond to public pressure.
Lore Pizza serves up Chicago-style pizzas (I await the day when pretty well every American city has a style of pizza named for it. “Hey, we got Milwaukee style pizza! If you don’t like that, maybe a Salt Lake City!”). But what I am after are the 24-inch New York-style pies. That’s right, 24 inches. As in, two feet. If you order one for pick-up, the pizza is cut in half, with each large half-moon getting its own box. The dough is cold fermented for 48 hours.
I brought the Supreme Sausage Crumble back to the office, which isn’t heavy on tomato sauce, but the crust had that nice bit of char, and it’s piled with sausage crumble, peppers and red onion. Each bite is thick with cheese.
And, Lore slices it so each piece is like one of those giant meal-size slabs you can get at some great late-night spots. And, they are foldable (eat as New Yorkers do!). A staff member who I will refer to as “Cory” wondered out loud if the giant slices could be cut into smaller pieces. Sadly, workers have rights in this province, so he still has a job, despite making such a pizza-heretic suggestion. Fold it, smash it into your mouth and then think to yourself “wow, I need something to drink.” Is it any mystery that Lore shares space with a brewery?
