In a life that is as fast-paced as the emergency room, Dr. Shazma Mithani finds solace in a cozy neighbourhood cafe — Happy & Olive. As an Emergency Physician and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta, Mithani has a demanding schedule. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, she always finds time for her favourite local haunt.
“To me, Happy & Olive is special because of its story. It’s truly local, with two well-established owners who have proven success in their other endeavours, like Red Ox Inn and The Canteen,” Mithani says. “The Red Ox was especially special to my husband and I — we would go there for anniversaries and special dinners.”
Mithani’s connection with Happy & Olive goes beyond just a frequent visit; it’s a cornerstone of her daily routine. “If someone wants to have a coffee date with me and I’m trying to squeeze things in, I’ll always suggest Happy & Olive because it’s a walk away from where I live, so it’s super accessible. There have been days where I’ve gone multiple times.”
The allure of Happy & Olive isn’t just the food but the community that resonates throughout the cafe. “It’s always busy, filled with people from the neighbourhood. I don’t even mind waiting for a table because I love seeing how successful they’ve been at establishing this neighbourhood spot.”
As for the dishes that stole Mithani’s heart? The crab cakes and the fries. “The garlicky parmesan fries are the perfect sharing item. Whenever I go with one other person and we’re hesitant about getting food, it’s the perfect super savoury, crispy, and aromatic sharing dish.”
