On a sweltering summer day, Oakberry Açaí on Whyte was like an oasis in a desert. The global chain is in more than 30 countries worldwide, but the new Old Strathcona location is Oakberry’s first foray into the Edmonton market. My friends and I stumbled inside, the crisp air was a welcome contrast to the blistering heat outside, the aroma of ripe berries mingled in the air.
The interior, adorned in shades of purple that mirrored the vibrant hues of the açaí bowls, set a perfect backdrop for our treat. We found ourselves perched on the last available high chairs, facing the lively street with the sun blazing directly in our eyes — a small price to pay for securing our spot in the small but busy shop.
Sitting there, perched above the sidewalk with the sun beaming down, the hustle and bustle of Whyte Avenue was on full display. It was the kind of moment that feels perfectly in tune with the vibe of the neighbourhood — chaotic, yet, somehow laid-back.
When my bowl arrived, it was a visual and culinary delight. The açaí was a deep, luscious purple, topped with cacao nibs, granola, peanut butter, chia pudding, bananas and strawberries — a harmonious blend that was almost too good to eat (keyword: almost). The flavour combos would impress even Remy from Ratatouille.
As the sun blazed outside, our bowls began to melt faster than we could eat them. It was a race against time to savour every bite before it turned into a colourful puddle. Brain freeze was an inevitable side effect, but it was a small price to pay, and one I would gladly pay again.
