People have been putting pineapple on pizza for decades. But, only in the past few years has it become a source of contention, with pizza-lovers being split into dogmatic “yes” and “no” camps. No quarter can be given. Who was the patient zero in the pineapple-on-pizza debate? Who stood up and said, “well, it’s been around for a while, but this really pisses me off? Are you with me?”
The results is a society where a lot of us are very judgmental about a simple topping choice. So, if you’re an anti-pineapple absolutist, then turn away. That’s because the Hot Hawaiian at the newly opened Ardrossan Pizza takes everything you hate and cranks it up.
You can find this pizza spot in a new commercial development in Ardrossan, just a few seconds’ drive south of Highway 16. As the hamlet grows — maybe to as many as 10,000 residents — the need for commercial spaces has increased, and this pizza joint/pub fills a void for the growing community.
There are a few personal pizza specialties on the menu, but I go with the Hot Hawaiian because I know it’s the one that’s going to piss off the most readers. I am in a mood.
The Hawaiian Pizza, as we know it, is a simple ham-and-pineapple concoction. But, at Ardrossan Pizza, the well-done base is adorned by not only the fruit, but with jalapeño peppers. The ham chunks aren’t the processed stuff; they’re solid chunks that look like they’ve been chiseled out of an Easter feast. And there’s a honey drizzle, with a hint of heat. So, there’s even more sweetness here than with the average Hawaiian pizza, and the jalapeños add a nice touch of heat that cuts through the sweet. I am not sure if this is my favourite Hawaiian pizza in the area, but it’s up there.
Now, cue the comments.
